5812 State Route 54, Mechanicsburg
Barn Owners: Charles R. and Sheryl L. Virts
Quilt Square: Crossroads
Sponsor: Citizens National Bank

Built in 1901, this bank barn has been in the Virts family since 1928. The timbers of the barn are both sawed and recycled hand hued oak beams from a previous barn on the same site. The barn is constructed with oak posts and beams, oak floors, pinsiding covered with sheet metal, and field stone and limestone foundation. Oak flooring was also recycled out of the older barn. The barn has been used to store hay, grain, straw, etc. A combination tractor shed and corn crib are on the west side. In the 1990s, a red sheet metal was applied to the exterior of the barn along with a new metal roof. An old solid wood Urbana Municipal Courtroom door was used to replace a worn out access door on the lower east side of the barn. The quilt pattern selected represents where they live at the crossroads of State Routes 54 and 4. The cross itself represents their beliefs. The colors red and gray represent Ohio State, the green represents agriculture, and the black and white represent love of history.
